Administrative Residency Program

The Administrative Residency Program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is a 12-month program designed for individuals seeking leadership positions in health care. The program is conducted as part of a health administration graduate degree program at an accredited university.

The residency program is tailored to meet the needs and interests of individual residents. It is structured to provide experiential learning in an academic medical center environment within departmental rotations for varying lengths of time over the year. Residents actively participate in projects in the acute hospital, long-term care facility and physician practice operations; meet with organizational leaders; and learn organizational skills. They also are involved in at least two organization-wide initiatives over the course of the year.

Areas of focused learning include:

  • Organizational structure and processes
  • Strategic planning
  • Financial management
  • Clinical services
  • Ambulatory services
  • Support services
  • Nursing services
  • Ancillary services

Working within these areas, residents learn administrative and leadership skills such as fostering team cohesion, motivating staff, creating an environment of continuous quality improvement, project coordination, effective communication, problem solving, customer service/service excellence skills and project management.

Residents also will have the opportunity to participate in programs and learn from other organizations within the Johns Hopkins Medicine family.
