The BEAD Core provides consulting and support services to new and established investigators engaged in human subject research on the Bayview campus. Specific services include programming for new and ongoing research projects, basic and complex biostatistical analyses, as well as consultation and support for study design, analysis plans, manuscript preparation, and public presentations.
Seminar Series: Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics for the Practitioner
The Bayview Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Data Management (BEAD) Core hosts a series of 1-day workshops (8:30am – 4:00pm) titled Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics for the Practitioner. These seminars are provided in an easy-to-understand format geared towards practitioners and cover topics related to epidemiology and biostatistics. The information will be presented in a conversational manner with applicable clinical examples. Participants are also encouraged to bring current projects they might be working on or beginning to conceptualize as there will be time devoted to smaller break-out sessions with BEAD Core members available for short consults. This series will be sponsored by the BEAD Core and thus will be at no cost to research-oriented practitioners of the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus.

The focus of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Brain Imaging Core is to facilitate the integration of neuroimaging methods into clinical translational research. The core will provide scientific and technical expertise in neuroimaging protocol development, image processing and analysis.

The Johns Hopkins University CIDR/SNP Center, located in the Triad building, is a high throughput genotyping facility serving JHU and the scientific community at large. It is part of The Genetic Resources Core Facility (GRCF), a JHU service center with six divisions. Collectively, these divisions offer a number of products and services to aid researchers in molecular biology and genetics studies. The Lowe Family contributions created the Genomics Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview, directed by Kathleen Barnes, Ph.D. Genomics is the study of which genes are turned on or off during certain diseases. Philanthropic funding made possible the recruitment of Dr. Felipe Andrade, a basic scientist in genomics. Drs. Barnes, Andrade and their team are working to identify the genes that contribute to flares and remissions of vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus and other chronic inflammatory diseases.
The Genetic Resources Core Facility is a JHU service center including the Core Store and five Research Services. Collectively, these divisions offer a wide variety of products and services to all Hopkins researchers. The divisions of the GRCF include:
The Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the NIH is a resource grant that supports the Johns Hopkins ICTR. This includes the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) on the Bayview Campus. The Bayview CRU, located on the 3rd floor of the B building, provides clinical research infrastructure resources including dedicated research nursing and specimen processing, a Sleep Research Core, Cardiovascular Imaging Core, Body composition and Exercise Core, Nutrition research support, and a Core laboratory. Support for informatics and biostatistics is also available through the ICTR.

The Microscopy Core at the Johns Hopkins Bayview offers confocal laser scanning microscopy services to the Hopkins community and beyond. Located in the Johns Hopkins Asthma & Allergy Center (2A.28), the Microscopy Core is available to help researchers develop technical solutions for special research needs. The Leica TCS SP5 confocal microscope is one of the top systems in the field, equipped with eight laser lines, four objective lenses and six PMT detectors. It's capable of simultaneous detection of up to five fluorescence channels. In addition to typical confocal applications, such as collecting digital fluorescence z-stacks at improved resolution, more advanced applications such as FRET and FRAP also are available.

The Multiphoton Microscopy Core Facility of NIH/NIDA at Johns Hopkins Bayview provides multiphoton confocal microscopy, optical stereology microscopy and image analysis services to the NIH/NIDA community and beyond by updating researchers of advanced light microscopy and image analysis techniques, training users on optimal operation of the instruments and image analysis software, and providing consultations for optimal design of advanced light microscopy experiments. This Facility has a Zeiss LSM 710 NLO Multiphoton Confocal Microscope, a Zeiss ApoTome Super-Resolution Microscope, and a PE UltraView Spinning Disk Confocal Microscope (INBS). The image analysis software packages include MBF Stereo Investigator, MBF Neurolucida, Zeiss ZEN 2009, PE Volocity (INSB) and MD MetaMorph (INSB).

The Courtney Amos Research Fund and the Daniel P. Amos Family Proteomics Center were established to study and apply proteomics using state-of-the-art technologies to understand clinical questions. Proteomics, the analysis of proteins encoded by genes and which can be modified to change function, permits physicians and scientists to understand and intervene in various forms of inflammation that underlie many diseases. Jenny Van Eyk, Ph.D., a leader in proteomics research, joined the Johns Hopkins faculty to lead the Proteomics Research Center.

The Rheumatic Disease Research Core Center (RDRCC) includes a free-standing bioassay service which affords clinical and basic science researchers the ability to investigate novel questions that could not otherwise be addressed, due to a lack of time, expertise or infrastructure. Current bioassay services include processing of whole blood (RNA/DNA isolation, PBMC preparation or serum separation), immunostaining of human or animal tissues, and immunoassays including ELISA and immunoprecipitation. The core also offers sample storage and/or shipping services. Sample barcoding and data management services are currently being developed.

SciVal Experts (previously named Collexis) is an expertise portal and a key component of Johns Hopkins University's mission to catalyze the application of new knowledge and techniques to clinical practice at the front lines of patient care. SciVal Experts is a subscription tool supported by the Welch and Harrison Libraries for internal and public users to identify Johns Hopkins faculty biomedical experts and their publications by area of expertise, based on published output indexed in the PubMed biomedical literature citation database. The SciVal Experts resource facilitates faculty research and project collaboration. SciVal Experts can be accessed at or through the Welch or Harrison Library websites which also offer tutorials on optimizing use of the site.
