The Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Leadership Fellowship is the premier hospitalist fellowship training program for academic hospitalists and future leaders of hospitalist programs. Fellows are trained and mentored by the nationally recognized faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The curriculum is based on the core competencies in hospital medicine, described by the Society of Hospital Medicine. Overview Eligibility Must have completed an ACGME-approved internal medicine residency Citizenship Able to accept U.S. citizens or permanent residents; however, other visa status does not disqualify candidates Salary $45-50,000/year, depending on PGY Duration Two years Emphasis Leadership, teaching, QI, research Clinical Duties Four months per year Research Training Course work in research methods, biostats and grant writing; research project required Back to top Goals and Mission The goals of the curriculum are to advance each fellow’s knowledge, attitudes and skills in the domains of clinical medicine, health care systems, professionalism, education and research. The curriculum will prepare fellows to become leaders in clinical and educational program development, agents of systems change, role models of professionalism and effective researchers. Back to top Objectives The fellowship curriculum is based on the Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine, defined by the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) in 2006. All physicians graduating from an internal medicine residency program are thoroughly trained in clinical medicine and procedures. However, internal medicine residents receive very little education in the topics listed within the "Health Care Systems" section of the Core Competencies. Some of these content areas include: - Consult medicine
- Care of elderly patients
- Palliative care
- Evidence-based medicine
- Practice-based learning and improvement
- Team approach and multidisciplinary care
- Patient safety and quality improvement
- Leadership
- Patient handoff and transitions of care
- Financial management processes
- Information management
- Medical ethics and professionalism
- Equitable allocation of resources
- Risk management
- Communication
- Education
- Research
We have arranged the twenty-four Core Competencies into five content areas representing the five overall goals of our curriculum: - Clinical Medicine: Fellows will advance their proficiency in providing clinical care for hospitalized patients, with emphasis on the following areas not necessarily focused on during internal medicine residency: evidence-based practice, palliative care, care of elderly patients, medical consultation, co-management with surgical services, and practice-based learning and improvement.
- Health Care Systems: Fellows will develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to facilitate health care systems change in ways that improve the processes and outcomes of patient care, with emphasis on the following areas: patient safety, quality improvement methods, transitions of care and risk management.
- Professionalism: Fellows will develop the knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviors that constitute professionalism, including: altruism, respect, cross-cultural sensitivity, accountability, confidentiality, communication and shared-decision making, integrity, compassion/empathy, duty, recognizing and managing conflicts of interest, self-awareness, and commitment to excellence and ongoing professional development.
- Education: Fellows will develop teaching and curriculum development skills that incorporate principles of adult learning, which will help prepare them to become educational leaders and innovators in hospital medicine.
- Research: Fellows will develop skills in research design, instrument development, data collection and analysis, research collaboration and the dissemination of findings, which will promote success, satisfaction and advancement in their academic medicine career.
Back to top Program Details The hospitalist fellowship will be a two-year program that will be hosted at three sites: Johns Hopkins Bayview, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Educational methods will include: - Clinical rotations
- Required readings
- Quality improvement projects
- Participation in academic conferences
- Participation in courses such as faculty development, curriculum development and public health classes
Fellows will complete many of the objectives independently, with skilled, dedicated mentors available for questions, advice and guidence. Mentors will engage the fellow's reflection regularly to stimulate their professional and personal growth and development. Fellows also will rotate on established services such as palliative care and hip fracture services. They will join the faculty to serve on committees throughout the Medical Center and participate in national professional conferences. Fellows will present ideas and work, such as new practice guidelines or QI initiatives, at faculty meetings and fellow's conferences (along with fellows in general internal medicine and geriatrics). Mentors will be assigned to fellows for each of their core competencies and rotations (e.g. a mentor for QI work, mentors for billing/financial management or a specific clinical mentor for each clinical rotation). Most of the mentors will be faculty in the Divisions of Hospitalist Medicine, General Internal Medicine or Geriatrics. Mentors will work closely with fellows to provide ongoing feedback. Quarterly meetings between the fellow and the fellowship committee (made up of the program directors and other faculty within the Division of Hospitalist Medicine) will address the fellow’s overall progress through the program.
