A Special Place for HEALing
In 2004, Hopkins ElderPlus opened its own assisted living residence in a two-story brick building in the Edgemere area of Baltimore County. The building is leased from the Associated Catholic Charities, which operates independent senior housing on the same plot of land. The Hopkins ElderPlus Assisted Living (H.E.A.L.) facility is designated for use only by our PACE participants.
H.E.A.L. features fifteen private rooms with shared bathrooms. Participants also can enjoy several common areas, including a living room, dining room and enclosed front porch overlooking a grassy area. To add a personal touch, volunteers from Johns Hopkins Bayview have adopted each of the private rooms and donated their time and decorative items to create comforting, home-like spaces for residents.
In Their Own Words: A Caregiver and Family Member Speak Out in Praise of H.E.A.L.
“Assisted living is a social model that's changing into a medical model due to the longevity of medically fragile, older adults and the success of managing chronic disease. We are helping to keep people alive—and improving their quality of life—for many years despite debilitating conditions.”
- Peggy Gunzelman, R.N., Manager of H.E.A.L.
“I am so very pleased and grateful with all the TLC that my husband gets at the Hopkins H.E.A.L. House. When I go home I can relax and feel secure that he is happy and safe in their hands. Thank you again and God bless each and every one.”
