Doctors' Day - March 30, 2010
The first Doctors’ Day observance was held on March 30, 1933 by the Barrow County Auxilliary in Winder, Georgia. The idea was conceived by Eudora Almond Brown, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, and was dedicated as a day to pay tribute to physicians and their contribution to society. Through the years the red carnation has been used as a symbol of Doctors’ Day.
Doctors’ Day became an official national holiday in 1990, with the signing of Public Law 101-473 which designated March 30 as National Doctors’ Day. Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center continues to honor this tradition, and the hard work and dedication of our doctors.
Take the time to show your appreciation for a doctor that has made a difference in your life, by making a tax-deductible donation to Johns Hopkins Bayview in their honor. The Edmund G. Beacham Lectureship Fund
The Edmund G. Beacham, M.D. Lectureship Fund was established to honor the pioneering contributions of Edmund G. Beacham, M.D., to geriatric medicine at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Beacham, who died in May 2008 at the age of 93, was former head of the Division of Chronic and Community Medicine, the forerunner of the current Division of Geriatric Medicine.
Contributions help to fund the annual Beacham Lectureship and Topics in Geriatric Medicine continuing medical education course, allowing future generations of health professionals to learn about advances in the health care of seniors. The endowed lectureship was initiated in 2009. It was Dr. Beacham’s vision and energy that led to the development of the Topics in Geriatric Medicine course in 1972. Today, it remains the oldest continuing program of its nature in the U.S.
