Camp Superkids
Camp Superkids is an annual summer camp for children with asthma managed by the Johns Hopkins Bayview's Department of Pediatrics.
The campers and counselors at Camp Superkids had a terrific week of camp, July 17-22, 2011. Held annually, this unique residential camp offers children with asthma the opportunity to interact with other children, learn more about themselves, form new friendships and have a traditional summer camp experience.
This year, campers from across the state of Maryland gathered together to participate in "Celebrating Asthma with Athletics." Throughout the week, campers participated in a wide variety of programs and activities. Daily interactive asthma education sessions, led by registered respiratory therapists, taught campers more about lung anatomy, medications, triggers, and warning signs to help them better understand and cope with asthma. Additionally, campers participated in a wide variety of activities including swimming, arts and crafts, karate, team building skills, and music sessions. The fun didn't stop when the sun went down, as evenings were spent doing group activities that such as a swimming party, camp dance, band performance and a "get-to-know-you" ice cream social.
During the week, campers were supervised by volunteer counselors from various backgrounds both medical and non-medical. Some of the Camp Superkids volunteers included nurses, respiratory therapists, United States Marines, as well as college and high school students. Each of these volunteers go out of their way to provide campers with a safe, fun, and educational camp experience, creating memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Camp Superkids would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors: the Thomas Wilson Sanitarium, WBAL Kids Campaign and Mr. Archie S. Golden.
If you are interested in learning more about Camp Superkids, either as a potential counselor, prospective camper or sponsor, please contact Heather Dougherty, Camp Superkids administrator, at 717-578-0465 or campsuperkids@gmail.com.
Annual C.R. Bard, Inc Golf Classic
Thanks to the participation of 33 corporations and many individuals, this year’s 16th Annual C.R. Bard, Inc. Golf Classic was an enormous success. As the Medical Center’s largest fundraiser, the Golf Classic represents a wonderful tradition of bringing together hospital, business and community leaders to support health care programs for those less fortunate in our community. The proceeds of this event directly benefit our community by improving mobile health programs and clinical services. This year, the Golf Classic, held on June 20, 2011, at Hayfields Country Club, raised over $57,000 to benefit the Johns Hopkins Bayview Fund.
The Johns Hopkins Bayview Fund is a philanthropic fund established by the Medical Center to support health care and wellness programs for our neighbors in need. It is the major funding component of the Community Care-A-Van, which provides mobile primary care services to underserved and at-risk populations, especially women and children.
The 2012 Golf Classic is scheduled for June 18 at Hayfields Country Club. For more information or to sponsor this event, call 410-502-5706.
