The first Doctors’ Day observance was held on March 30, 1933 by the Barrow County Auxilliary in Winder, Georgia. The idea was conceived by Eudora Almond Brown, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, and was dedicated as a day to pay tribute to physicians and their contribution to society. Through the years the red carnation has been used as a symbol of Doctors’ Day.
Doctors’ Day became an official national holiday in 1990, with the signing of Public Law 101-473 which designated March 30 as National Doctors’ Day. Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center continues to honor this tradition, and the hard work and dedication of our doctors.
