What is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is the study of hormones and how they affect virtually every part of your body. Hormones are chemical messengers that are sent from one part of the body and communicate with another part of the body. Examples of important hormones are thyroid hormone, testosterone (male hormone), estrogen (female hormone) and insulin - to name just a few. Some common endocrine conditions include diabetes mellitus, cholesterol problems, under and overactive thyroid, osteoporosis and menopause (male and female).

Our Staff of Experts
Every doctor in the Division of Endocrinology is fellowship trained and board certified. The major interests include diabetes mellitus, fluid disorders, cholesterol disorders, thyroid disease, metabolic diseases (osteoporosis and calcium disorders) and male hormonal disorders. Our faculty is also involved in research projects. Because our faculty members provide consultations for patients in the hospital, emergency situations may arise and your appointment may need to be rescheduled. We will make every effort to reschedule appointments in a timely manner.

Making an Appointment
Appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To make or reschedule an appointment, please call 410-550-4906. Our administrative office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. To leave a message for one of the doctors or the nurse, please call 410-550-6497. You can contact us via email at endocrine@jhmi.edu. If you'd prefer to reach us by fax, our number is 410-550-6864. Each doctor has call back hours. During these times phone calls will be returned.

Special Requests
Prescription refills: Please allow us 48 hours to refill your prescriptions. We would prefer that your pharmacy fax us the refill request. Another option will be to leave us a voice message.

Lab tests: All of your lab tests will be reviewed by your doctor. If you want to review the results with your doctor, please make a follow up appointment. If your tests are abnormal, the nurse or doctor will call you to review the results and ask you to make a return appointment.

Medical records:
If you would like a copy of your medical record, please send us a written statement requesting your records. The letter can be sent via fax. Our fax number is 410-550-6864. Your records will be sent to you within two weeks.

Billing Information
When you review your bill you will notice two separate charges. One is the facility fee, the other is our professional fee. This might be different from previous billings in which both fees were combined into one.
