Mammography

Mammography is an important diagnostic radiology procedure used to detect abnormalities in the breast. The procedure is widely used to detect breast cancer which can be effectively treated in the early stages.

Annual screening mammograms for all women over age 40 are recommended by the American College of Radiology. Any changes in the breasts such as a rash, nipple discharge or a lump (which can be felt) should be reported to a physician. In those cases, a diagnostic mammogram may be required.

Mammograms are performed by licensed board certified technologists. In addition, the mammography division is accredited by the American College of Radiology and the FDA. Staff members are specially trained to perform and interpret breast x-rays of the highest quality with the least amount of radiation exposure.

Exams provided in three clinical rooms include:

  • screening mammography

  • diagnostic mammography

  • mammographic guided needle localizations

  • mammography/template guided ultrasound

Equipment used by the unit includes:

  • General Electric Senographe DMR

  • dedicated mammography processor (film, screens and cassettes)
