Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a highly developed innovative technique that provides anatomic images in multiple planes and allows for information on tissue characterization. Images characterized by different tissues are obtained by varying the number and sequence of pulsed radiofrequency fields. Physical and chemical properties are used to identify these tissues. Unlike the images produced by x-rays, which are associated with the absorption of x-ray energy, MRI images are based on proton density and proton relaxation dynamics in a very powerful magnet.
The department of imaging at Johns Hopkins Bayview also offers several other specialized procedures, such as perfusion imaging, diffusion imaging, spectroscopy, HASTE imaging and an advanced method of angiography called FISP. These techniques help physicians more accurately detect and diagnose disorders ranging from kidney, gallbladder and heart disease to neurological problems, such as brain infarcts, tumors and seizure disorders.
In addition, Johns Hopkins Bayview offers the latest in state-of-the-art MRI scanners. Capabilities include multichannel head, spine, flex, wrist, body, knee and breast coils.
