Information Services

The Information Services department develops and supports clinical, financial and administrative systems for the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Within the department there are three groups: LAN Services, Systems Development, and Desktop Services.

LAN Services configures and supports the servers and the computer network connecting JHBMC with the rest of Hopkins and the Internet. The group maintains over 60 application and file and print servers. Network server operating systems supported are Novell and Microsoft. The group also supports a 1200 node network that is built on state-of-the art Cisco equipment.

Systems Development specifies, develops, installs, and supports vendor applications as well as developing in-house applications. The development staff works closely with medical center departments and colleagues at Johns Hopkins Hospital to provide applications to meet the needs of Hopkins Bayview. The development staff uses Visual Basic software to create new applications and is expert at using HL7 interfaces between disparate Hopkins systems.

Desktop Services supports computer hardware and software at the user level. The group maintains and supports over 1000 user workstations for over 2500 staff. The desktop group supports all Microsoft operating systems and Office suites. The clinical, financial and administrative applications supported vary from single-user to campus-wide applications. The Desktop Services group also provides training on clinical applications.

Information Services at Bayview is actively involved in supporting how information technology can improve the delivery of patient care while providing quality customer oriented systems services.
