The Johns Hopkins Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program is structured to train physicians to be healers and leaders in medicine. Historically, program participants have a phenomenal record of passing the ABIM Certifying Examination (a.k.a. "the boards"). Graduates of the program have taken several different professional routes in widely-divergent geographic areas. About one-third pursue careers in general internal medicine in primary care, medical education, public health related work, or ambulatory based subspecialties. Two thirds enter traditional subspecialty disciplines. The success of residents in obtaining post-residency fellowship training positions in medical subspecialties at leading academic medical centers has been extraordinary, with many choosing to remain at Hopkins for fellowship training.
