Marvin M. Schuster, M.D., is the former director and namesake of the center for gastrointestinal motility and digestive disorders. Now retired, Dr. Schuster has many firsts of which to be proud: he was the first director of a gastrointestinal division to be trained both in medicine and psychiatry, the first person to form a gastrointestinal division with completely integrated full-time psychology and medical faculty, and the first to establish a gastrointestinal pain management center within a gastrointestinal division. He has also pioneered non-surgical procedures for some motility disorders and made significant discoveries pertaining to motility disorders, IBS, gastroparesis, chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction and the biobehavioral aspects and treatment of these digestive diseases. A past president of the American College of Gastroenterology, Dr. Schuster is known internationally for his clinical work and research. Dr. Schuster was a professor of medicine and psychiatry and was appointed the first Janssen Strauss-Halbreich Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was a member of the Johns Hopkins faculty from 1961 until his retirement in 2000.
