Fellowship Program

The Neurosciences Critical Care Fellowship Program at Johns Hopkins pioneered the training of fellows in the 1980s and continues to be the leading program in this sub-specialty training. As of 2007, the Johns Hopkins program has trained 44 physicians coming from Neurology, Anesthesiology-Critical care Medicine, Neurosurgery, and Internal Medicine, the most in the subspecialty of neurocritical care. The graduates of the fellowship program have assumed leadership roles in leading institutions as directors of neurocritical care programs, chairs of departments, established research investigators, institute directors and key positions in professional societies related to neurocritical care.

The two-year fellowship training in neuroscience critical care medicine is offered to board eligible neurologists, neurosurgeons, and anesthesiologists. A major program goal is to train Neurocritical Care Clinician Scientists. The first year as a junior fellow is spent developing skills of patient care, teaching and supervision of housestaff. The second year as a senior fellow, added responsibility is taken with the introduction as leader of the NCCU team (with the attending physicians support), formal teaching of residents and fellow, and developing research activities in the critical care environment. Research is mandatory. Fellows undertake 12 months of research in clinical arena, translational, or laboratory-based. Each fellow has the combined resources of major contributing departments at their disposal. Once an area of interest is identified, a formal mentorship is established.

The fellowship training is based primarily at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, with all fellows rotating at the Bayview NCCU. The Johns Hopkins Bayview fellowship experience is enhanced with intensive work on clinical neurophysiology in the NCCU (with Dr. Peter Kaplan), the Stroke Center, Intracerebral Hemmorhage Center and Encephalitis Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview.
