October 12, 2006 The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center plans an open house and community fair, October 21, from 1 to 4 p.m., to celebrate the grand opening of its renovated and newly renamed Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. The event features tours of the center, free health information and screenings, activities for children, refreshments and a D.J. The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Hopkins Bayview, located on the garden level of the John R. Burton Pavilion, combines the latest advances in prevention, diagnosis, research and treatment with compassionate patient care. The Hopkins Bayview center is equipped to treat many types of cancer, with a focus on lung, esophageal and neurological cancers. The new facility is part of the internationally recognized Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins on the East Baltimore medical campus. “Our new facility will allow us to capitalize on the resources and strengths of both institutions. As a result, a number of things can happen,” says Gary R. Shapiro, M.D., chairman of oncology at Hopkins Bayview. One example is geriatric oncology, the center’s flagship program, which draws on the expertise of specially trained Hopkins Bayview oncologists and takes advantage of the Medical Center’s vast resources in geriatric medicine. The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview is on the Medical Center’s main campus at 4940 Eastern Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21224, with easy access from I-895 or I-95.
