Yelena Frankel, M.D., MPH, wound fellow in the department of dermatology, won second place for her presentation, "Diagnosing Chronic Wound Infection: Comparison of Routine Cultures, Quantitative Microbiology and Molecular Techniques," at the Residents and Fellows Symposium at the National Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Frankel’s research was a collaboration between the Johns Hopkins Wound Center and the Division of Infection Diseases at Johns Hopkins Bayview.
"Our long-term goal is to describe the bacterial ecology in chronic wounds and how the bacterial populations impact wound healing," says Dr. Frankel. "Chronic wounds are a very serious, debilitating and prevalent problem in America. We are working to determine more accurate techniques to measure the types and amounts of bacteria in wounds, and to find out how the bacterial populations change with treatment."
Of the nearly 200 entries, 20 were selected to give oral presentations, which were judged based on the quality and importance of the research, and on the quality of the presentation.
