Richard Bennett, M.D., to Take Helm as New President of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

April 9, 2009

Richard G. Bennett, M.D.Richard G. Bennett, M.D., will be named president of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, effective July 1, 2009. He will succeed Gregory F. Schaffer, who retires June 30, 2009, after serving ten years as president. Schaffer and Bennett will work together through June to orchestrate a smooth transition. Johns Hopkins Bayview is a full-service, Joint Commission-accredited academic medical center with 700 beds in Baltimore, Md. The Raymond and Anna Lublin Professor in Geriatric Medicine, Bennett currently is the executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) for Johns Hopkins Bayview, a position he has held since 2006.

Bennett’s career at Johns Hopkins has included work as a clinician, researcher and educator. Prior to his role as executive vice president and COO, Bennett was vice president of medical affairs at Johns Hopkins Bayview. He also was executive medical director of the Johns Hopkins Geriatrics Center (now Johns Hopkins Bayview Care Center) from 1997 to 2003. As executive medical director of the Geriatrics Center, Bennett led a variety of clinical programs, many of which became national models of care. He directed the fellowship training program in geriatric medicine, overseeing and mentoring one of the largest groups of clinical and research geriatrics fellows in the country.

A graduate of Dartmouth College, Bennett earned his M.D. in 1982 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He then completed both his internship and residency at Baltimore City Hospitals (now Johns Hopkins Bayview) and his fellowship in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is an active member of professional associations and serves on several boards.

Most recently, he championed the Medical Center's initiatives focused on diversity and inclusion, and is currently working to establish a model program to improve the health of the communities surrounding the Medical Center through the development and enhancement of medical-religious partnerships. As part of his experience at Johns Hopkins Bayview, Bennett also serves in teaching roles and provides patient care. His work and research has been published in dozens of journals, abstracts and books, and the second edition of the book he co-authored entitled Building Healthy Communities Through Medical-Religious Partnerships will be published later this year.

“Johns Hopkins Bayview is an outstanding medical institution and I’m proud to be a part of its history and future. It’s a privilege to lead and carry on the great legacy and work inspired by extraordinary contributions made by the physicians, nurses and staff here,” says Bennett.

“Dr. Bennett understands the challenges of leadership and has grown in his expertise and reputation as a fair-minded leader and consensus builder as he has moved for the past 15 years through a series of leadership positions at Johns Hopkins,” says Ronald R. Peterson, president of the Johns Hopkins Health System and The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine. “He is passionate about Johns Hopkins Bayview and, as president, plans to advance clinical integration opportunities with the East Baltimore campus while pursuing the execution of the facilities master plan for the Medical Center.”
