(January 19, 2005) A big step in the effort to give all children a better start is to build recognition for the importance of high-quality early childhood programs. Working toward that goal, the Johns Hopkins Bayview Child Day Care Center recently earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAETC), the nation's leading organization of early childhood professionals. NAEYC created its accreditation program in 1985 to set professional standards for early childhood education and to help families identify high-quality programs. To earn accreditation, the Child Day Care Center conducted a self-study to determine how well the program met NAEYC standards. After improvements were made, the program was observed by independent, professional validators, then reviewed by a national panel. The program now is accredited for a five-year period. In addition to annual reporting to NAEYC, staff at the Child Day Care Center will continue to evaluate the program and maintain a high-quality environment for families and children. "This was a long process, and the end result is a testament to our great team," says Jennifer Nizer, director of the Child Day Care Center. "This accreditation is an honor and places JHBMC Child Day Care in an elite group of early childhood programs." What's New Index
