(January 19, 2005) Bayview's Department of Nursing is on the journey to obtain Magnet designation, one of the highest achievements a hospital can reach in its nursing practice. Magnet status recognizes the high caliber of nursing staff and how that professionalism translates into patient and health-care services. Research demonstrates that Magnet hospitals consistently provide the highest-quality care. The Magnet recognition program was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to recognize health-care organizations that provide the very best nursing care. The program also is an effective way to share successful practices and strategies among nursing systems. The Magnet recognition process includes submission of documentation to demonstrate compliance with 62 standards. If review of the documentation phase is satisfactory, a site visit follows to verify the standards in action at the staff-nurse level. Magnet hospitals demonstrate the values of quality care, nurse autonomy, effective verbal communication, innovation, empowerment and service excellence. Initial priorities for the Medical Center include unit safety initiatives, decentralized decision-making and recruitment and retention. A basic premise of the Magnet designation is to recognize a climate that reinforces collaborative work relationships. Research shows that a high-quality nursing staff is one of the most important attributes to attract quality physicians, pharmacists, physical therapists and other professional staff. Therefore, achieving this status creates a positive "halo" effect well beyond the nursing department. The Magnet process at Hopkins Bayview will initiate an intense look at the way we organize and deliver nursing care. It also will encourage each nurse to take responsibility for improving his or her service. We are grateful to have such a vast pool of talent and enthusiasm as we embark on this important journey!
