Simon Mears, M.D., Ph.D., and Martin Makary, M.D., Named 2005 Jahnigen Scholars The American Geriatrics Society named two Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center physicians as 2005 Jahnigen Scholars. Simon Mears, M.D., Ph.D., orthopaedic surgery, and Martin Makary, M.D., general surgery, are among ten recipients selected from a national pool of nominees to join the prestigious Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Program. Established in 2002, the program provides two-year development awards to promote increasingly important geriatric training for specialists in the fields of anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery and urology. The program is funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation. Only ten specialists each year are selected for the award. The 2005 cohort brings the national total of Jahnigen Scholars to 40.
