Vascular disease is a leading cause of stroke, death, and limb amputation in the United States today. This is particularly dangerous in many people because the disorder generally goes undetected until a life-changing medical event occurs.
The vascular lab at Johns Hopkins Bayview is offers life-saving screening screenings at a reduced price of $40 per screening (charges elsewhere can range from $100 to $150 per screening). This is a cash service, meaning that no authorization from a medical insurer is necessary to have the screenings performed. Screening services include those for carotid artery blockage, aortic aneurysm and ankle-brachial pressures to assess from peripheral vascular disease. The non-invasive testing will be performed by a registered vascular technologist using state-of-the-art equipment. Results will be reviewed by a vascular surgeon.
People who should consider screenings are those 55 years or older with cardiovascular risk factors such as a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, high cholesterol, known cardiovascular disease, or a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm.
