Recently, Mahmoud B. Malas, M.D., chief of endovascualar surgery, performed the first intravascular carotid stenting done at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Intravascular carotid stenting is a minimally-invasive alternative option to the traditional procedure carotid endarterectomy and helps patients suffering from stroke and carotid artery blockage, and those at high risk for surgery.
While stenting does not involve anesthesia or surgery, clinical trials are ongoing to find its advantages and disadvantages and to determine its effectiveness as a long-term therapy.
