To prepare for your new baby's arrival, Johns Hopkins Bayview offers educational programs with classes devoted to childbirth preparation, parenting and baby safety. A scheduled tour of the birthing facility and opportunity to meet the staff also are available.
Breastfeeding Class
Thinking about breastfeeding your newborn baby? Learn the benefits of breastfeeding, behaviors of a normal newborn, how to pump and store breastmilk and how medications and contraceptives affect breastfeeding. The class is offered one Sunday per month from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $30.
Childbirth Preparation Series
To prepare for your delivery day, Johns Hopkins Bayview provides in-depth instruction on labor, delivery, pain control and other topics surrounding the birth experience to women and their labor coaches. Childbirth is taught on Mondays for six consecutive weeks from 7 to 9 p.m. It is recommended that women take this series in their seventh month of pregnancy. Classes are taught by a certified childbirth educator. The cost for the series is $65.
Childbirth Preparation Weekend
In just two days, expectant parents will complete the entire Childbirth Preparation series–an ideal alternative for busy parents-to-be. Whether you're having your first child or you need a refresher course, this series may be what you're looking for. Classes are offered once a month on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost for the weekend is $65.
Tour of the Maternity Center
On your tour of the Maternity Center, you'll find state-of-the-art labor, delivery and recovery suites with a home-like atmosphere. Patients deliver and recover in private rooms complete with a bathroom, shower, free TV and phone service, and a cozy sitting area with refrigerator.
To help you become more familiar and comfortable with the surroundings, tours also include visits to the newborn nursery and postpartum rooms, as well as to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), emergency room, admitting area and Stork Parking. We look forward to getting to know you and introducing you to our services. A question and answer session is provided after the tour. Tours are free and held two Saturdays a month from 2 to 3 p.m.
