Mission
Our mission is four-fold:
- to provide quality and accessible orthopaedic care, while focusing on customer service, privacy, safety, outcomes and fiscal responsibility;
- to provide graduate orthopaedic medical education that offers professional and diverse clinical, research and academic experience;
- to provide personal and professional staff development and training for all members of the department, including opportunities for research and publication of scientific inquiries;
- to provide leadership toward intiatives with other disciplines and departments at Johns Hopkins Bayview, as well as with other components of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
We believe in keeping with the history of Johns Hopkins Bayview as a community hospital and a place where orthopaedic residents can learn and be mentored.
Vision
Our vision is devoted to the future growth and development of the department and is made up of six specific elements, including:
- to establish Johns Hopkins Bayview as the pre-eminent regional center of excellence for providing geriatric and ambulatory orthopaedic care, while maintaining our committment to the community;
- to continually emphasize patient safety and service excellence;
- to attract and retain the highest quality faculty to provide superior patient care, conduct innovative research and lead in the training of the next generation of orthopaedic surgery leaders;
- to maintain our position as the exemplary rotation in The Johns Hopkins University Orthopaedic Surgery Training Program, and provide orthopaedic fellows and residents with challenging clinical and academic experience while serving as mentors and role models;
- to enhance the quality and financial resources of our International Research Center for Orthopaedic Advancement through partnering and academic achievement; to achieve national recognition for exceptional conduct and publication of scholarly research;
- to extend the Johns Hopkins University reputation for excellence to include convenience and access, with strategically placed outpatient centers, by close cooperation with The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the establishment of a Johns Hopkins Bayview outpatient ambulatory surgical center.
- to institute a culture of personal leadership, staff developmnet and organizational excellence that draws creative, motivated and highly-skilled personnel to all positions within the department.

Through the open exchange of ideas and experiences between faculty, residents, support staff and other departments of Johns Hopkins Bayview and Johns Hopkins Medicine, we will provide a culture of continuous improvement.

Integrity is the basis of all medical care, scientific research and our relationships within and outside of the department.

We exist to care for individuals who are suffering from illness or injury. We will continuously provide the highest possible standard of compassion, beginning with the first phone call.

While individuals are valued, our strength lies in teamwork and cooperation. We will utilize the tremendous depth of knowledge and experience of all personnel to support each component of our own department, as well as to assist others.
Innovation
Advancement of patient care depends on continual innovation in the areas of administration, surgery and rehabilitation. We embrace change, but recognize that patient safety and profitability also will come from simplifying and standardizing procedures.
Fiscal Responsibility
To continue serving our patients, we will balance profit and loss. We also will have a surplus to re-invest in the department and our people.
