The International Center for Orthopaedic Advancement serves as a conduit to orthopaedic innovation by bringing together high-caliber engineers and clinicians in one location. By combining a surgical dissection suite and instrument development lab, (containing materials-testing equipment with the latest computer controllers), the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery opens the door to a unique opportunity for advancement in surgical techniques and orthopaedic implants.
 
The Center consists of six surgical stations, as well as facilities management for cadaver tissue. The space has an airy feel with excellent natural light, high ceilings and a wonderful view. It also boasts a large conference room and state-of-the-art projection systems. What's more, the facility meets all operating room ventilation requirements and has a locker room and shower area. The Center easily accommodates more than 20 surgeons who can learn in an atmosphere where individual attention is key.

Setting the standard
The orthopaedic specialists at Johns Hopkins Bayview are part of a multidisciplinary team of professionals dedicated to working together to care for the total patient. The team also includes biomechanical engineers who, together with the surgeons, work to advance orthopaedic instrumentation and techniques.
 
By creating a high-technology classroom in an operating theater, the Center fosters extensive interaction and close communication. Using real-time audio and video in both the operating room and instrument development lab, participants can interact with the surgical team.
 
The technologically enhanced site has video cameras to capture a variety of angles that bring observers right into the procedure. The camera zooms in for a close-up and provides an overhead perspective that is truly up close and personal. The result: a personalized program where participants are free to share and receive information.

The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, is part of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Hopkins Bayview has a rich history of caring for patients. Dating back to 1773, the hospital is one of the oldest, continuous health care systems on the East Coast. Today, Johns Hopkins Bayview is a full-service, JCAHO-accredited teaching hospital, with physicians on faculty at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
