Philosophy The Department of Pharmacy's philosophy is to provide comprehensive, integrated services and activities to patients, hospital staff and the community. The department has four primary areas of service: operations (drug dispensing systems), clinical, education and research. These areas have been defined, and each person in the organization has a responsibility for minimum standards of competency. Each area is intimately tied with the other for complete continuity. The basic premise, therefore, is to provide the patient with the right medication, in the right dose and form in a timely manner. This means:
- Ordering the most rational therapeutic agent in this setting
- Monitoring the medication's effectiveness and/or toxicity
- Making sure those who administer medication to the patient know how to do so safely
- Insuring that someone is responsible for a positive outcome to therapy
The department provides staff with opportunities for progressive program development . This allows pharmacists to identify areas of need and create their own work plans or groups to create a pharmacy niche. The Pharmacy staff also believes that quality service involves the entire health care team and works hard to maintain effective communications across the continuum of care. We believe that patients and the institution as a whole benefit from our strong commitment to service. Conversely, the department also benefits from a strong service commitment by others.
