Program Details

Preceptor demonstrates finger stickThe Pharmacy PGY1 Program at JHBMC is customized for each resident based on his or her goals, interests and experience.The program offers the resident three distinct learning experiences throughout the 12-month program: core, elective and longitudinal experiences.

All residents are required to complete core experiences in ambulatory care, internal medicine, drug policy, administration and critical care. The core rotations are five to six weeks in length. The resident will complete a month-long departmental orientation as their first rotation.

The program also offers elective rotations in a wide variety of patient populations.

Elective rotations typically are four to five weeks in length. Elective rotations include:

  • Burn Center
  • Pain and palliative care
  • Outpatient oncology
  • Progressive Care Unit/Cardiology
  • Cardiac Care Unit
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • Infectious diseases
  • Pediatrics/Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • Investigational Drug Service
  • Off-site rotations at The Johns Hopkins Hospital also may be available

Longitudinal rotations are completed throughout the 12-month program. These include:

  • Research project to be presented at Regional Pharmacy Conference
  • Ambulatory Care
  • Practice Management

Teaching opportunities also are available. They include:

  • Required inservices to medical and nursing staff
  • Department inservices
  • Teaching requirements at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
  • Precepting pharmacy students
  • Nursing orientation
     

Licensure

The resident must have received a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited School of Pharmacy. Residents are required to become a licensed pharmacist in the State of Maryland by September 1st as outlined in their residency agreement.
