Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center offers a variety of support groups and educational programs. The programs listed on this page are held at the Medical Center and are provided at no charge or for a minimal fee.  For more information about the Medical Center’s community education programs, call 410-550-1360 (unless otherwise noted).
 

Support Groups

Burn Support Group
The burn survivor support group provides emotional support to both inpatient and discharged survivors, covering topics such as scarring, anger management, returning to work and how to respond to intrusive questions or staring.
    Day: Every Tuesday
    Time: Noon to 1 p.m.
    Fee: Free

Gastric Bypass Surgery, Lap Duodenal Switch and Lap Sleeve Gastrectomy Support Group
This is an ideal forum for those who have had gastric bypass surgery or for those considering the surgery. This support group is offered two times per month.
    Day: Second Thursday of every month or third Thursday of every month
    Time: 5 to 6 p.m.
    Fee: Free

Inch by Inch: Stroke Support Group
This monthly meeting provides education and support to stroke survivors and their families.
    Day: Third Thursday of every month
    Time: Time varies

A Joint Effort: Joint Replacement Education
This session introduces you to the health care team who will answer your questions about hip or knee replacement surgery. You will learn about anesthesia, strength-building diets, exercise programs, pain management and much more. Our goal is to help you prepare for a smooth surgery and hospital stay.

Laparascopic Banding Support Group
This is an ideal forum for those who have had a lap banding surgery or for those who are considering this surgery.
    Day: First Thursday of every month
    Time: 5 to 6 p.m.

Seeds of Hope Bereavement Support Group
Seeds of Hope is a welcoming environment that offers education and support about dealing with grief and loss.
    Day: First Tuesday of every month
    Time: 6 to 7:30 p.m.
    Fee: Free

Educational Programs

Maternity Care Classes
Johns Hopkins Bayview offers a variety of educational classes for parents and siblings. For more information or to register, call 410-550-BABY.

Childbirth Preparation
This six-week course provides expectant mothers and their labor coaches in-depth instruction on labor, delivery, pain control and other topics related to the birth experience Classes are led by a certified childbirth educator.
        Day: Mondays
        Time: 7 to 9 p.m.
        Fee: $65; registration is required

Sibling Class
Through activities, videos and a tour of the newborn nursery, children ages three to eight     learn the important and special part they play in being a big brother or sister.
        Day: One Saturday per month
        Time: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
        Fee: $15 per child; registration is required

Breastfeeding Class
This course prepares mothers to successfully breastfeed their newborn babies. Topics include the benefits of breastfeeding, normal newborn behaviors, pumping and storing breast milk, and how medication or contraceptives affect breastfeeding.
        Day: Second Tuesday of every month
        Time: 7 to 9 p.m.
        Fee: $30; registration is required
