Bayview Summer Scholars Program

Every summer, medical researchers and faculty at the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus host approximately 150 students. Programs at the National Institute of Aging and National Institute of Drug Abuse, as well as several Johns Hopkins University programs, focus on recruiting under-represented minorities and those from underprivileged backgrounds with the goal of increasing diversity in academic medicine and science.

The goal of Summer Scholars is to create a campus-wide program that will be seen as a national model to increase diversity within academic medicine. Through collaboration, we hope to enrich the programs that we currently have, broaden the applicant pool for all campus-based programs and strengthen the future financial foundation for these initiatives through partnering and attracting new external support.

2013 MERIT Scholars Arrive at Johns Hopkins Bayview

This summer, 12 Baltimore City Public School students will be working at Johns Hopkins Bayview through the MERIT (Medical Education Resources Initiative for Teens) program. Nine sophomore MERIT scholars will be rotating through six clinical departments, including cardiology, pulmonary medicine, asthma/allergy, Hopkins ElderPlus, neurology, rehabilitation and orthopedics. Two junior MERIT scholars will be completing research internships at NIDA, which will culminate in a poster presentation in August.

MERIT aims to propel Baltimore City's brightest students on a trajectory toward medical school. Students are selected during the sophomore year of high school. A variety of resources are provided through their high school graduation, including paid summer internships at Johns hopkins Bayview, undergraduate and medical school mentors, weekly Saturday sessions focused on professional development and academic enrichment, and college admissions guidance.
