Shermak, M.D., FACS, graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from Franklin and Marshall College. She earned a medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and was the first to finish a combined residency program in general and plastic surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, board-certified in plastic surgery and an active member in the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS). After the completion of training in plastic surgery, Shermak pursued an interest in aesthetic and breast surgery, and received specialized training from G. Patrick Maxwell, M.D., in Nashville. There, she gained extensive experience with both implant and flap reconstruction of the breast, to allow the full range of reconstructive options to each breast cancer patient. She also learned the latest techniques in body contouring surgery, including liposuction and body lifts, and facial rejuvenation surgery, including laser resurfacing, facial peels, endoscopic surgery and facelifts. An author of several publications in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, Shermak's research focuses on the basic science of soft tissue and bone healing and tissue engineering, and clinically on breast surgery and body contouring surgery. She also is a member of the Plastic Surgery Research Council. Returning to Johns Hopkins in 1999 to practice in general plastic surgery with particular specialization in the latest techniques in aesthetic and breast surgery, she heads the division of plastic surgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview and is an assistant professor of plastic surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. |
