Surgical Research at Johns Hopkins Bayview

The surgical research program at Johns Hopkins Bayview, part of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, forges with a mission to advance the science of surgery and ultimately improve the care of all surgical patients.

The research programs include basic scientific investigations, translational research that brings basic science to the bedside and clinical research to improve patient care. Investigators within the division of surgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview have collaborative projects with scientists within Johns Hopkins Medicine as well as throughout the world.

History

The tradition of excellence in surgical science at Johns Hopkins Bayview is best reflected in the pioneering work of former department members, Mark M. Raitch, M.D. and Peter Safar, M.D. Both lent to significant landmarks in the progress of surgery in the twentieth century by introducing premier methods and models of surgical stapling (Raitch), the surgical intensive care unit and cardiac resuscitation (Safar).

More recently, Louis Kavousi, M.D. and Mark Rattner, M.D. founded the use of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy for kidney transplantation in the early 1990s.
