Our Director
Lawrence J. Cheskin, M.D., FACP, Director, is a board-certified internist. He is director of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center and Associate Professor of International Health (Human Nutrition) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Cheskin founded the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center in 1990 and is known for his empathic "bedside manner." He is the principal investigator on several research grants and is a frequent contributor to research and popular articles on weight management.
Our Program Manager
Carmen Roberts, MS, RD, LDN, earned a degree in dietetics at James Madison University, as well as a master's in health education and health administration from Towson University. She completed a dietetic internship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Carmen joined Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in 1999, where she worked at the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center as a dietitian. In 2002, she became a clinical nutrition manager and served as the director of nutrition education and practic, and coordinator of the Dietetic Internship program until 2008. She oversaw all operations of clinical, ambulatory, and nutrition education and research programs.
Our Medical Faculty
Laura Hanyok, M.D., board-certified in internal medicine, holds clinical interests in obesity, care of chronic illnesses, and developing and maintaining healthy lifestyles. Dr. Hanyok also practices in the general internal medicine practice and teaches residents at Johns Hopkins Bayview.
Our Dietitians
Cynthia Finley, RD, LD, CNSD, Clinical Dietitian Specialist, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park and completed an internship program with Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. She practiced dietetics in the clinical setting for almost 18 years before joining the Weight Management Center to provide counseling in obesity and weight loss.
Lorraine Giangrandi, RD, LD, Clinical Dietitian Specialist, has served as a registered dietitian at Johns Hopkins Bayview since 1997. Certified by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) in both adult and childhood/adolescent weight management, she enjoys working with youth and promoting health within schools. Giangrandi earned a bachelor's degree in nutrition at Pennsylvania State University and completed a dietetic internship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She currently is pursuing a master's degree in human nutrition at Eastern Michigan University.
Our Behavioral/Psychology Staff
Denise Supik, MS, LCPC, earned a master's in clinical psychology from Loyola College and is a licensed clinical professional counselor. She specializes in the psychological treatment of obesity and its related problems. She has been with the Weight Management Center since 1994, and is experienced in both individual and group therapy.
Sarah Johnson, Psy.D., earned a master's and doctoral degree in clinical psychology at Loyola College in Maryland. Prior to joining the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center, Dr. Johnson served in a variety of settings including a therapeutic afterschool program, a community mental health center, several college counseling centers and, most recently, an inpatient eating disorders facility. Her general approach to working with all clients is one of collaboration, mutual respect and genuineness. Dr. Johnson's clinical and research interests include mood disorders, interpersonal relationships, and the mental health benefits of complementary and alternative medicine.
Our Exercise Physiologist
Greg Freitag, MS, CSCS, earned a bachelors degree in kinesiology at the University of Maryland and a masters in clinical exercise physiology at the University of Florida. With personal knowledge of the struggles and challenges of trying to manage weight, Freitag is passionate about people with their weight loss endeavors. He feels an important component of the process is to adopt positive health and exercise behaviors for life.
