The Pediatric Weight Management Program at the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center is designed to help children between the ages of six and 12 who have problems with: - recent excessive weight gain
- a need for improved eating and exercise habits
- diagnosis of overweight/obesity with related medical conditions such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hypertension
The program offers a comprehensive nutrition evaluation and exercise prescription. Other services available include metabolic testing and behavioral counseling. Guiding Principals for Treating Overweight Youth - Establish personalized treatment goals based on age, degree of overweight and the presence of medical conditions.
- Involve the family in the treatment plan.
- Provide frequent monitoring.
- Provide realistic recommendations for dietary and exercise changes that can be incorporated by both the child and family.
- Encourage lasting lifestyle changes.
Program Costs The cost associated with this comprehensive program, including a nutritional assessment, exercise prescription and six parent/child sessions, is $350. We encourage all patients to check with their insurance companies to determine if all or a portion of the cost may be reimbursed.
